Description
Sulfate conjugation catalyzed by sulfotransferase (SULT) enzymes plays an improtant role in the biotransformation of many hormones, neurotransmitters, drugs and other xenobiotics. The SULT2 family of SULT enzymes catalyzes the sulfate conjugation of hydroxysteroids such as dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and other steroid hormones. Genetic polymorphisms involving this enzyme might play an important role in both the biotransformation of exogenously administered steroids, and equally, or more important, the biotransformation of endogenous steroid hormones in organs such as the prostate. Diagnostic tests for the determination of genetic variations in these pathways for biotransformation of steroids and hormones might ultimately be used in the determination of "risk factors" for the development of diseases such as prostate cancer.
