CRMP-5 and CRMP-5 Antibodies as Markers for Small-Cell Lung Carcinoma, Neuroblastomas and Thymoma, and for Immunotherapy

Reference #:

2000-058

Inventors/Contributors

Vanda A. Lennon, M.D., Ph.D., Guy E. Griesmann, Thomas J. Kryzer, Zhiya Yu, Ph.D.

Description

We have identified in blood of patients a novel antibody that binds to electrically excitable brain cells and to lung cancer cells. This antibody serves as a marker of neurological autoimmunity related to lung cancer or a tumor of the thymus gland. We have identified and named CRMP-5 a previously unknown protein as the target of this novel antibody. We have cloned the gene encoding CRMP-5 and made anti-CRMP-5 antibodies by immunizing rats with a product of that gene. There are several potential clinical applications that include detection, imaging and treatment of specific types of cancer.
