Description
SULT2A1 catalyzes the transfer of inorganic sulfate to hydroxysteroids and uses PAPS as the sulfate donor. Genetically based variations in SULT2A1 may affect the metabolism of steroid compounds (DHEA, ethinyl estradiol, minoxidil, androsterone, androstenediol, epiandrosterone, androgens, estrogens, testosterone, and pregnenolone) that are used for drugs, as well as structurally related xenobiotics and endogenous hormones. May be useful for determining that an individual is predisposed to a heart condition, stroke, or cancer and be at risk from HRT. Three non-synonymous cSNPs were found in the African American population that had enzyme activities of 57%, 15% and 93% of the wild-type gene enzyme activity. Data published in The Pharmacogenomics Journal (2002) 2, 48-56.
