Use of Beta Atrial Natriuretic Peptide as a Screening Biomarker for the Detection of Systolic Left Ventricular Dysfunction and as a Co-Marker with BNP to Detect and Evaluate Heart Failure

Reference #:

2004-159

Inventors/Contributors

John C. Burnett Jr., M.D.

Description

The heart releases a peptide called atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). In heart failure, an abnormal form of this peptide occurs and this has been termed beta ANP. We believe that its release and then subsequent measurement may help detect asymptomatic heart failure in the general population. We also believe that it can be used with other biomarkers of heart failure to increase the sensitivity and specificity for the detection and diagnosis of heart failure.
