Description

Patients with Alzheimers Disease have large numbers of senile plaques in their brains. A relatively rare form of amyloid beta protein, ABeta42, deposits selectively in senile plaques compared to the common ABeta40 form. Selective deposition of ABeta42 form to decrease relative to the common ABeta40 form. Consequently the ratio of ABEta42/ABeta40 is reduced prior to development of Alzheimer's Disease. These changes are evident in blood. Our data shows that, in elderly people, a low ABeta42/ABeta40 ratio is an excellent predictor that Alzheimer's Disease or the mild cognitive impairment that precedes Alzheimer's Disease will develop in the next five years.
