A t(1;19)(q10;p10) Mediates the Combined Deletions of 1p and 19q in Human Oligodendrogliomas and Predicts and Better Prognosis of These Patients

Description

Combined deletions of the chromosomes 1p and 19q arms are associated with glioma of oligodendroglial lineage. They are also associated with a much longer overall survival as well as a response to chemotherapy and radiation therapies. We have discovered that a single genetic alteration - an unbalanced translocation t(1;19)(q10;p10) - mediates the combined deletion and a method to detect the translocation in tissue specimens. The translocation is associated with a better overall survival and response to therapy in gliomas.
