Pressure Mapping Seat Cover with Alarm and Data Tracking System for Wheelchair Users

Reference #:

2005-246

Inventors/Contributors

Ronald K. Reeves M.D.

Description

The X-Sensor pressure mapping system (www.xsensor.com) has the capability of measuring pressures on the skin for wheelchair users. "Pressure mapping" is routinely used by therapists to determine which type of seat cushion best meets the needs of a individual wheelchair user. This technology could be modified and placed into a seat cover that could be connected to a processor that could both alarm above a preset pressure and track pressures over time. This technology would be used to prevent and treat pressure sores for wheelchair users. The cost of managing a single advanced pressure sore with plastic surgical treatment can easily exceed $100,000. Nationally, the cost of pressure sores for wheelchair users may exceed 1 billion dollars. A device such as this could help prevent sores and result in considerable savings to the health care system.
