Description
Multiple myeloma is a universally fatal plasmaproliferative disorder despite aggressive chemotherapy and transplantation. An immunotherapeutic approach to target myeloma cells for killing by toxin genes or radioisotopes may be very useful therapeutically in myeloma and such approaches have already been shown to have clinical activity in other malignancies. Our investigators have devised a system for the treatment of this disorder, utilizing specific immunogenetic targets. They have engineered novel antibodies and other reagents that specifically target the offending cells, while delivering agents that produce specific cellular destruction. Initial proof of concept has been established. This program consists of a multitude of reagents and expertise in the clinical and scientific area. The designed treatment should also prove useful against primary amyloidosis, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance and possibly acute myeloid leukemia.
