Apparatus and Means to Measure Vessel Stiffness

Reference #:

2003-023

Inventors/Contributors

James F. Greenleaf, Ph.D., Randall R. Kinnick, Xiaoming Zhang, Ph.D.

Description

Ultrasonic radiation pressure is used to induce surface waves in the wall of a vessel. The speed and attenuation of the waves are calculated from the motion of the vessel wall detected using Doppler or other noninvasive means. Advanced modeling of the wave propagation in the wall of cylinders is used to determine the complex elastic modulus of the wall. The method is noninvasive, and quantitative. In addition several measurements per second can be made allowing dynamic changes in vessel tone to be measured.
