Method of Demonstrating the Presence of Fungi in Human Body Fluids

Reference #:

2004-181

Inventors/Contributors

Hirohito Kita M.D., Diane L. Squillace, David A. Sherris M.D., Jens Ponikau M.D., Mark C. Swanson

Description

A research tool/method to detect the presence of fungal organisms in human body fluids, particularly from mucus of the respiratory tract, by detecting and quantitating fungal antigens within said mucus. Once a specific antigen is present, the specific organism producing it must be present as well. This method allows us to determine the amount of fungi directly by determining the amount of fungal antigens. In comparison, cultures still take up to 30 days and have a high false negative detection rate.
