3D Image Processing for Whole-Bone Integrity Measurement and Analysis

Reference #:

2004-271

Inventors/Contributors

Richard A. Robb Ph.D., B. Lawrence Riggs Jr. M.D., Sundeep Khosla M.D., Jon J. Camp, L. Joseph Melton, III M.D.

Description

The Biomedical Imaging Resource working with the Endocrine Research Unit has developed a unique and powerful software system for the measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) and other biomechanical properties of bone from helical QCT images of the spine and proximal femur. This software can be used to measure and study the effects of aging on bone integrity. The system includes a database of DICOM images, an interactive interface for the orientation of femur and vertebra images into standard anatomic position, a detailed analysis of the mechanical properties of any selected cross-section, and storage of measurement results in a linked database table. This image analysis tool and linked database facilitates efficient and flexible longitudinal studies of stratified patient populations.
