Use of Sulfonylureas as a Treatment for Eosinophilic Disease

Reference #:

1996-124

Inventors/Contributors

Gerald J. Gleich, M.D., Jennifer L. Bankers-Fulbright, Ph.D.

Description

In vitro treatment of human eosinophils with various sulfonylureas inhibits cytokine-mediated eosinophil survival and activation. This activity mimics that of glucocorticoids, which are currently used to treat human eosinophilic diseases. The ability of glyburide to mimic glucocorticoids in vitro suggests that this drug may also function in vivo to treat eosinophil-associated diseases.
